"I chose to paint Cristina Scabbia because I listened to Lacuna Coil regularly as a teen. Their dark, gothic style spoke to my rebellious spirit as I struggled to find my place in the world. Their music and lyrics validated thoughts and feelings that I had that others dismissed. Cristina's career is inspiring to me. Claiming space as a woman in a male-dominated industry is no easy feat, and Cristina provides a powerful example of how to embody that space confidently and unapologetically." - Maxine Thirteen
Bio
Maxine Thirteen is a self-taught, figurative painter based in St. Louis, Missouri. Her creations often explore bygone eras, the surreal and the macabre. Maxine's oil paintings focus on portraiture and utilize inspiration from old films, vintage advertisements, and pin-ups to explore femininity, social satire, and introspection. Her work often incorporates morbid or unusual elements into glamorous imagery to simultaneously entice and disturb the viewer. Since 2019, Maxine has displayed her vibrant oil paintings in numerous spaces throughout the Midwest and beyond. She is currently represented by 31art Gallery in St. Louis, MO and Union Gallery in New Orleans, LA.
