Bio

Shannon Purcell grew up in western Massachusetts and began drawing and painting in oils at a
young age. He studied fine arts and painting at MassArt in Boston and the techniques of the old
masters with painter David Addison Small. In 2017 he relocated to Austin, where he currently
paints and is the Assistant Director of Cloud Tree Gallery. His focus is narrative portraiture in oil
using classical techniques with a contemporary approach. His current work is about projection. It explores identity and the various constructs our culture
projects onto it, as well as the masks we use to conceal ourselves. In these paintings he
projects images from films and other cultural sources onto his models, which creates a kind of
contextual camouflage, and allows him to explore his inspirations more deeply in portraiture. He
seeks to show the complexities of the subject's inner life and the forces that shaped them to find
the fuller biography underneath and to explore more narrative possibilities. Using classical
techniques in oil paint with visual references to our shared popular culture, his work explores the
relationship between ourselves and the authentic and seeks to convey the mysteries and truth
through the noise. His work can be found in numerous galleries and private collections around
the country.
